Or are you working in rows... a diagonal stitch across on one "trip", then returning to cross the diagonal on the second? The first method generally requires more floss than the second one. I've found it happens with cheap kits that I found on Liquidation, when I pay full price for a beautiful kit by a reputable company I never have a shortage.
